Naples Lungomare Walk vs Via Aniello Falcone: Why I Always Choose the Hill

The Naples lungomare walk — the seafront promenade from Mergellina to Castel dell’Ovo — is one of the great urban walks in Italy. I walk it regularly. But when I want to photograph the gulf, I go uphill. Via Aniello Falcone in Vomero gives you the same gulf from 200 metres above, and the difference in what you see is significant.

What Changes When You Go Higher

At sea level on the Naples lungomare walk, the gulf is wide and flat. Vesuvius rises above the horizon in the distance. The islands float on the water. It is beautiful and horizontal.

From Via Aniello Falcone, the view is both wider and deeper. You can see the curve of the coastline disappearing in both directions. Vesuvius is at eye level rather than above the horizon. The city spreads below you in its full complexity — the historic centre, the port, the castle on its rock — before the sea begins. The spatial relationship between all these elements becomes clear in a way it never is at ground level.

The Walk Along Via Aniello Falcone

The street runs east to west for over a kilometre. Walking it from east to west, the view builds gradually. Vesuvius is visible first, then the centre of the gulf, then Capri, then Posillipo. By the time you reach the western end of the street, the entire panorama is assembled and you understand why anyone who lives here finds it difficult to consider living anywhere else.

The walk itself is flat and easy — unlike the lungomare below, which is longer and more exposed to traffic noise. Via Aniello Falcone is quiet. Birds. Distant city sounds. The occasional scooter.

Combining Both Walks

The ideal Naples day includes both. Walk thelungomarein the morning at sea level, then take the funicular up to Vomero in the late afternoon and walk Via Aniello Falcone during the golden hour. Two walks, two completely different versions of the same view.
