The Full Route

TheSpaccanapoliline runs roughly east to west through the UNESCO-listed historic centre. It changes name several times: Via Benedetto Croce, Via San Biagio dei Librai, Via Vicaria Vecchia. Follow the straight line regardless of the name changes.

The western end at Piazza del Gesù Nuovo is the classic starting point. The diamond-stone facade of the Gesù Nuovo church is immediately distinctive. Nothing else in Italy looks like it.

The Cappella Sansevero is two minutes off the main line, north of Piazza San Domenico. Book in advance — it sells out. The Veiled Christ sculpture inside is among the most technically astonishing artworks in existence.

Santa Chiara cloister is on the main line and requires a small entrance fee. Worth every cent. The majolica tile columns are unlike anything else in the city.

Street Food Strategy

Eat constantly and cheaply. Pizza fritta is the essential Spaccanapoli food. A half-moon of fried dough filled with ricotta, cicoli, and pepper. It costs almost nothing. It weighs more than you expect. Eat it walking, from the paper it comes in, with one hand.

Follow the smell of frying. The best stalls have a queue. Join it without looking at a map. Trust the locals.

Practical Tips

Walk Spaccanapoli Naples in the morning. The light is best. The crowds are thinner. The bars are freshest. Wear shoes with grip — the cobblestones are polished and slippery when wet. Keep your bag in front of you. Walk confidently. Then slow down completely and let the street absorb you.
