Naples Vomero Neighborhood: Where Locals Live With One of the Best Views in Europe

The Naples Vomero neighborhood sits on the hill above the historic centre, connected to the city below by three funicular railways. It is middle-class, residential, clean in the way that Neapolitan residential districts are clean — functional rather than curated. And on its southern edge, along Via Aniello Falcone, it has one of the most extraordinary urban panoramas I have ever photographed.

What Makes Vomero Different From the Tourist Naples Below

Vomero is where Neapolitans live rather than where they perform Naples for visitors. The bars serve locals at local prices. The market on Via Luca Giordano sells vegetables to the same families every week. The evening passeggiata along these streets is genuine — people walking for the pleasure of it, not for Instagram.

Via Aniello Falcone runs along the southern edge of Vomero. It is a ordinary street with an extraordinary consequence: the hillside drops away steeply on its south side, and through every gap between the residential buildings, the Gulf of Naples appears.

The Residential Character of the View

This is what makes the Via Aniello Falcone panorama different from the dedicated viewpoints elsewhere in the city. It is embedded in daily life. A woman hangs laundry from a balcony with Vesuvius behind her. A man sits on a bench reading a newspaper with the gulf as his backdrop. A child rides a bicycle along the pavement with Capri visible between the buildings.

The view is not fenced off or presented. It just exists, as part of where people live.

Getting to Vomero and Via Aniello Falcone

Three funicular lines connect Vomero to the city below. TheCentrale funicularfrom Piazza Fuga is the fastest. From the top, walk west along Via Aniello Falcone. The best views are in the western half of the street. Check official website for current funicular timetables and ticket prices.
