Naples Photography Spots: When the Town Climbs the Cliff
The famous image of the Amalfi coast from naples is horizontal — the cliff face seen from the sea, with the town as a vertical element in the middle distance. Via San Giovanni reverses this. It takes you into the vertical dimension of the town directly. You climb rather than observe. The Naples photography spots that result are among the most unusual on the coast.
I started photographing this street because I was looking for an elevated viewpoint. I found something better — the climb itself as subject.
The Street as a Vertical Journey
Via San Giovanni del Toro climbs the hillside above Amalfi town through a sequence of stairs, ramps, and level sections. The buildings on either side are residential. Windows open at unexpected heights. Laundry lines bridge the gap between opposing facades. Plant pots occupy every horizontal surface — terracotta, ceramic, improvised containers. TheAmalfihillside gardens are visible above, terraced with lemon trees that have grown here for centuries.
The sea appears between buildings as you climb. First as a fragment. Then as a wider strip. Then, from the higher sections, as the full bay panorama that the coastal road gives you at speed but that the climbing street gives you in slow revelation.
Photography on the Climb
The staircase sections of Via San Giovanni photograph well in two directions. Shooting upward: the steps recede in perspective, buildings frame the sky, and the geometry of the climb is the subject. Shooting downward from above: the steps lead the eye toward the town rooftops and the sea beyond. Both directions require morning light from the east — the western-facing walls are lit directly before noon.
The narrow sections between buildings create the same hard contrast as Via Giovanni below — one wall lit, one in deep shadow. Here the contrast is vertical rather than horizontal, because the stairs run at a steeper angle than the flat alley below.
What You Find at the Top
The upper sections of Via San Giovanni reach into a quieter residential Amalfi where the tourist infrastructure has not followed. Small vegetable gardens. A cat on every warm stone. The smell of lemon trees and the sound of the sea below, muffled by distance. This is one of those Naples photography spots where the effort of reaching it separates the image from anything made at piazza level.
The View Back Down
From the highest accessible point on Via San Giovanni, look back toward the sea. The town is compressed below — rooftops, the cathedral bell tower, the arc of the seafront. Vesuvius is visible on clear days as a faint outline across the water to the north. The distance from this vantage point to the Naples photography spots of the city itself becomes tangible. Two completely different places, visible in the same frame.
Practical Information
Via San Giovanni is a public street. Always accessible, always free. Wear shoes with grip — the stone steps are smooth and can be slippery when damp. The climb takes fifteen to twenty minutes to the upper residential sections. Worth every minute. Come early before the heat of the day makes the climb uncomfortable. The Naples photography spots on the vertical streets of Amalfi exist only for those willing to leave the piazza behind.

📸 Photo Tips for Instagram & TikTok
Make your Naples content stand out. Here is what works best at this exact location.
Climb Via San Giovanni at 9am until you reach the first open terrace with a sea view. Shoot back down the alley — the compressed perspective shows six or seven house facades stacked above each other with a fragment of sea visible at the bottom. Strong vertical format, 35mm or wider.

Film yourself climbing Via San Giovanni from the bottom — show the stairs, the doorways, the plants in pots, the occasional cat — then stop at a terrace and pan slowly to reveal the sea below.
