Arrive before 6:30am. Set up on the eastern quay edge. Shoot west along the basin axis. The reflection of the Rione Terra promontory appears at the far end of the water surface, inverted, the volcanic tufo amber even in the pre-dawn blue light.

Exposure Settings for the Mirror

The mirror condition at darsena Pozzuoli is a low-light situation. The pre-dawn sky provides minimal illumination. The boat lights and harbour lights are the primary warm light sources. Expose for the warm lights at approximately ISO 800 to 1600, f2.8, two to four seconds on tripod. The reflection and the boats above it will be properly exposed at this setting. The sky above will be slightly underexposed — which is correct, preserving its deep blue rather than washing it out.

After the Mirror: The Daylight Harbour

After the mirror condition ends — typically around 7:30am as the wind arrives and boat traffic begins — the darsena Pozzuoli transitions to a different set of Naples photography spots subjects. The boats active in the basin, the catch being unloaded on the quay, the morning harbour workers visible at close range. Switch from tripod and long exposure to handheld and faster shutter for this phase. The documentary harbour photography continues for another ninety minutes before the morning activity peaks and subsides.
