San Salvatore de’ Birecto: The Coronation Church

The church on Atrani’s waterfront was where the Doges of the Amalfi republic were crowned and invested with their ceremonial cap — the birecto — for centuries. The bronze doors were cast in Constantinople, a companion piece to those of the Amalfi cathedral nearby. The church is still in active use. Check locally for current opening hours. The interior is modest but historically loaded.

Morning Light in Atrani

Walk east from Amalfi seafront along the coastal path — five minutes. The piazza is at the base of the staircase descent from the main road above. Always free, always accessible.
