Borgo Marinari Santa Lucia , Napoli
The Perfect Naples Itinerary: 3 Days in Southern Italy’s Greatest City
Planning a Naples itinerary for 3 days? You’ve made an excellent decision. Three days is the sweet spot — enough time to absorb the city’s UNESCO-listed historic center, make a day trip to Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast, and still find yourself lingering over a late espresso at the waterfront wondering why you didn’t book a longer stay.
Here’s how to make every hour count.
Day 1: The Waterfront & Historic Center
Start where Naples meets the sea. Borgo Marinari — the tiny fishing hamlet tucked beneath Castel dell’Ovo in the Santa Lucia waterfront district — is the perfect place to orient yourself. This ancient village, built on the Megaride islet, is one of the oldest inhabited spots in Naples. Today it’s lined with seafood restaurants and framed by the castle’s golden stone walls.
Morning — Santa Lucia and Castel dell’Ovo
Arrive early. Walk the waterfront promenade of Via Partenope as the city wakes up, with Vesuvius reflected in the still water of the gulf. Enter Castel dell’Ovo (free, open daily) and climb to the terrace for panoramic views stretching from Capri to the Phlegraean Fields.
Return to Borgo Marinari for a coffee at one of the waterside bars before heading into the city.
Afternoon — Spaccanapoli and the Historic Center
Take Via Chiaia inland into the beating heart of Naples. Walk Spaccanapoli from east to west, stopping at the Cappella Sansevero (book ahead!), the cloisters of Santa Chiara, and the street food stalls along Via dei Tribunali. Try a cuoppo (fried seafood cone) or a pizza a portafoglio (folded street pizza) — both are eaten standing up, Neapolitan-style.
End the afternoon at the National Archaeological Museum if you have energy, or save it for Day 2.
Day 2: Pompeii Day Trip
No Naples 3-day itinerary skips Pompeii. Take the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale (€3.20 each way, 40 minutes) to Pompei Scavi station. The ancient Roman city, frozen by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, is one of the most haunting and fascinating archaeological sites on earth.
Budget the full day. Hire an audio guide at the entrance or join a guided tour (worth it for context). Don’t miss the Forum, the Villa of the Mysteries, and the plaster casts of eruption victims.
Return to Naples by 6pm for an aperitivo on the waterfront.
Day 3: Vomero, Posillipo & Farewell Pizza
Climb to the Vomero hill via funicular and visit Castel Sant’Elmo for the best panoramic view of the entire city. Walk through the elegant streets of the Chiaia district on the way back down.
In the afternoon, take a taxi or bus to Posillipo for views of the coastline that will genuinely stop you in your tracks.
End your three days in Naples the only correct way: sitting in a historic pizzeria, working through a Margherita DOC from a wood-fired oven. Try Pizzeria Di Matteo, Sorbillo, or Starita — all within the centro storico, all life-changing.
Practical Tips
Book accommodation near Toledo or Chiaia for the best base. Three days flies by in Naples — you will plan a return trip before you leave.
