Naples Hidden Gems: Eremo dei Camaldoli and the Highest View in the City

Naples Hidden Gems: The Monastery at the Top of Everything

Most visitors to Naples never go above Vomero. The Eremo dei Camaldoli sits higher still — at 458 metres, it is the highest point in the Naples urban area. From here, the bay of Naples hidden gems spread below in every direction. On clear days, the view reaches from the Cilento coast in the south to the Apennines in the north.

I drove up here for the first time following a tip from an old priest. I have been back many times. Nothing else in Naples gives you this perspective.

The Hermitage and Its History

TheEremo dei Camaldoliis a working Camaldolese hermitage founded in the fifteenth century. Monks still live here. The complex includes a church, individual hermit cells, gardens, and a pharmacy producing herbal products using centuries-old recipes. The atmosphere is genuinely contemplative — the silence at this altitude, above the city noise, is extraordinary.

Visits to the monastic areas are restricted. Check the official website for current access rules before going. The panoramic terrace is generally accessible during daylight hours.

The Panorama

From the terrace, the entire Gulf of Naples opens below. Vesuvius dominates the eastern view — from this elevation, you see the full cone shape clearly, including the secondary crater of Monte Somma behind it. The city spreads below in its true density. The islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida appear simultaneously on clear days.

I arrive at dawn when the city below is still dark and the sky above begins to lighten. The transition from darkness to colour at this elevation is unlike anything I have seen from lower viewpoints.

Getting Up to the Eremo

The hermitage is accessible by car via the Camaldoli road from the Pianura neighbourhood. The drive takes about twenty minutes from the city centre. Public transport options are limited — check current AMN bus routes before relying on them.

The road itself is a Naples hidden gem. It climbs through pine forest, past volcanic outcrops, through neighbourhoods that feel completely disconnected from the tourist city below.

The Pharmacy and Gardens

The hermitage pharmacy sells herbal preparations, honey, and liqueurs produced by the monks. These make genuinely unusual souvenirs — rooted in place and tradition rather than manufactured for tourists. The gardens visible from the terrace are maintained by the monastic community and reflect centuries of botanical knowledge.

Practical Information

The Eremo dei Camaldoli is one of those Naples hidden gems that requires planning rather than impulse. Confirm visiting hours before going. Dress modestly — this is an active religious community. Arrive early for the light and the solitude. The drive up rewards you before you even arrive. The view when you get there will recalibrate your sense of what Naples actually is.
