Ancient urban legends about the island of Capri and Naples

Vesuvius and Capri: The Love Myth that Explains the Geography of the Gulf

NAPLES – A forbidden love, a drama of destiny, and the birth of two icons of the Campania landscape. This lesser-known but powerfully evocative legend recounts the genesis of Vesuvius and the island of Capri as the fruit of a tragic passion.

The protagonists are Vesuvius, a young nobleman with a fiery temperament, and Capri, a shy and sweet-natured girl. A deep love blossomed between the two, immediately thwarted by their respective families. To end the relationship, Capri was forced to embark for a distant land.

But the young woman’s heart failed her. In despair, she threw herself into the sea. From where her remains hit the bottom, the splendid island of Capri miraculously emerged, a jewel of rock and light born from her sacrifice.

Vesuvius, devastated by the loss of his beloved, committed an extreme act. He decided to sacrifice himself, setting himself on fire right in front of the place where Capri had disappeared. His ashes, accumulated, gave rise to the majestic and tormented volcano, today a silent guardian of the gulf.

Two souls, two sealed destinies: the island as eternal beauty emerging from the sea and the volcano as the perennial flame of an unfulfilled love, in one of the most poetic legends of the Mediterranean.
